Dr. Xerces Blue

Occupation: Doctor ( Not the kind of doctor who could take your tonsils out .The kind of doctor who studies bugs...dead bugs.)

Insect: butterfly

Favorite food: Deerweed nectar

Xerces has known Ace ever since she was a little caterpillar. Not only is she ravishingly beautiful but she has the brains too. She has also saved Ace from being squashed more than once.

Queenie Bee

Queenie Bee's younger sister wants it all. She dances, she sings and she dreams of being an actress. Those who have seen her "Pollen Dance" call it " simply hypnotic." How far will she go to make her dreams come true?

Zito the Mosquito

Occupation: Motham Police Sergeant

Insect: mosquito

Scientific name: Culex nigripalpus

Favorite food: nectar, donuts

Ace's friend and sidekick. They've known each other ever since they were pupae at the Larva Country Day School. Zito is one of Motham City's finest cops and is the first one to arrive at a crime scene usually holding a donut. Zito wants everyone to know that it's the female, not the male, mosquito that sucks blood.

Twig

Occupation: Mime ( loves to immitate tree branches)

Insect: walkingstick

Scientific name: Diapheromera femorata

Favorite food: cherry leaves

In addition to being a mime, Twig also enjoys slow walks on the beach and jogs (very slowly) around town. Twig sometimes finds himself in the middle of all the action at a crime scene. He hopes to finish the Motham Marathon this year before everyone begins it next year.

The Roach Brothers

Occupation: Professional pests and suspects

Insect: cockroach

Scientific name: Periplaneta americana

Favorite food: everything

The roaches seem to be everywhere in Motham City and have a habit of scattering whenever lights are turned on. Because they are always scurrying around town and running from something they are usually the first to be brought in for questioning by the Motham Police.

Favorite food: Corn

Maggots are generally found in large groups, but this one likes to work alone. Most of the time you can see him squirming around Motham City minding his own business. It's not really known if he has eyes.

Smooch

Occupation: You don't want to know

Insect: assassin bug

Scientific name: Zelus renardii

Favorite food: bug juice

Nobody in Motham City wants anything to do with the assassin bugs let alone get near their kisser. These bugs sometimes are known as "kissing bugs" and they are poisonous to humans too. After injecting their prey with poison the assasin bugs long straw like rostrum allows them to suck out the liquified tissues in much the same way we use a straw to drink a milkshake! Yum!

Katie

Occupation: Singer songwriter

Insect: katydid

Favorite food: fruit and flowers

There's nothing like the sound of katydids singing on a hot humid night in Motham City. However sometimes Katy overdoes her singing and brings a lot of attention to herself. When asked if it was her who was singing, Katy replies "Katydid, Katydid" and sometimes"Katydidn't, Katydidn't." So did the Katydid do it? Who knows?

Sunny and Sonny

Occupation: street lamps

Insect: glow worms

Scientific name: Coleoptera Phengodidae

Favorite food: Snails and slugs

If it wasn't for glow worms like Sunny and Sonny Motham City would be a dark and dreary place . These glowing beetles give the city a luminescence all it's own. When daylight comes you'll see them on every street corner taking a nap until the sun goes down and Motham City comes alive. See if you could find the burnt out glow worm about to be replaced on the title page of Ace Lacewing Bug Detective.

 

Jack and Stretch

Insect: giraffe beetle

Scientific name: Trachelophorus giraffa

Favorite food: plants

Jack and Stretch make their home in the Motham City Beetle Zoo with all the other beetles. They are actually weevils which are not only the largest family of beetles, but also the largest family in the entire animal kingdom! In the Beetle Zoo you'll also find, rhinoceras beetles, elephant beetles, kangaroo beetles, skunks beetles, zebra beetles and tiger beetles.

Hover

Occupation: Police helicopter

Insect: Damselfly

Scientific name: Odonata Zygoptera

Favorite food: gnats

Hover is a Motham Police Department helicopter. He's called onto the crimes scene when police need the area illuminated and suspects are fleeing. Hover will fly above them with the spotlight (usually a glow worm) until the police could nab them.

Hops

Occupation: Street musician

Insect: Green fool Grasshopper

Scientific name: Acrolophitus hirtipes

Favorite food: alfalfa

Some grasshoppers rub their wings together to create music, others snap their wings together while flying, and others just rub their hind legs across their front wings. But Hops plays saxophone. At night you'll usually see him in Motham City or down by Cricket Creek under the streetlights wailing away. Ace loves when Hops plays below the window to his office.

 

Bug Family

The Parent bug is one of the rarities of the insect world in that it cares for it's young. The female can sometimes be seen with it's young walking the streets of Motham City. At the slightest alarm, the mother herds her brood to shelter while staying exposed herself to act as decoy to any would-be predators.

Dung and Dunger

Occupation: Sanitation engineers (trash bugs)

Insect: Dung Beetles

Scientific name: Scarabaeus sacer

Favorite food: Dung. They think it's delicious.

It's the job of Dung and Dunger to keep the streets of Motham City clean and tidy. Late at night you'll see them rolling their dung ball through the streets picking up dung and trash other bugs have left behind. Dunger has been known to say," It's a good job with good pay and all you could eat. I love my job!"

Drago

Occupation: Security Guard

Insect: Praying Mantis

Scientific name: Tenodera Sinensis.

Favorite food: butterflies, bees, beetles, frogs, spiders, mice, lizards, and small birds.

What better insect to have as a security guard than a praying mantis. It's a fierce hunter, they have very good eyesight and they are very quick. Al the drone certainly knows their value because he uses them to guard Drone Honeyworks. What preys on a praying mantis? Bats. Most kinds of mantid have a hollow space inside their bodies, which helps them hear the high-pitched sounds that bats, one of their main predators, make.

Tiny

Insect: Tiger beetle

Scientific name: Coleoptera Cicindelidae

Favorite food: Sand fleas and gnats

Just like the giraffe beetles, Jack and Stretch, Tiny makes his home in the Beetle Zoo. Tiger Beetles, by nature, ambush and consume other insects and small creatures. However Tiny has been so well fed at the Beetle Zoo that he hardly knows how to ambush or hunt for himself. If he gets out of his cage and escapes from the zoo he has been found cuddling with lacewings who are too scared to move.

This is Ace's favorite food. He's loved them ever since he was a little larva and that's why Ace has his office right above Cafe Aphid. Ace will accept being paid for solving a crime with aphids.
